“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” Matthew 6:22
Have you ever wandered into a place, on purpose or by accident, and were suddenly drawn to someone’s eyes? Have you ever been in a ministry-like situation where the person before you was angry, yet their eyes looked like a scared child? Or to flip that around, they pretended to be innocent, yet their eyes burned with rage and deceit?
Some of what you are seeing is based on mere human learning, but some of this is the Holy Spirit working and speaking in you. As we are called to walk by the Spirit, we need to learn to rest more and more on the guidance the Spirit is giving. To do this we should look at and ponder deeply the actions of Jesus.
When God walked the Earth, what did people see?
When the Leper's heart was broken, his lips trembled out his plea for help. What did his heart tell him? A cultural castaway humiliated with a torn soul, “If you are willing Lord.” Was he fearing another rejection? Or did he see Heaven in His eyes when Jesus's compassion drove him to say, “I am willing.” What did the sight of Jesus's eyes do to his heart?
In the sweltering Middle East heat of the day, with the bugs flying all around her head. Carrying the empty water jugs that swayed back and forth as she walked. Did she pay more attention to them hitting her side or the unknown man sitting at the well?
Did her heart jump with fear at the first sight of his eyes, or was there something present she could not describe that tugged at her heart to come closer? Did she see a whisper of compassion, something that was apparently so foreign to her? Did she leave the well with the same look in her eyes?
In the cool of the night, hiding from the eyes of many. What did Nicodemus see in the eyes of Jesus? Did he see support, compassion, or something else? Did he perhaps see a tear of joy when the Lord knew that this old man’s heart was learning, and changing? Did it tug on this old man’s heart?
When the man at the pool argued with Jesus, bound in his pain, loss, and anger had he even looked into Jesus's eyes yet? Did his heart start to change? Was a spark of faith ignited when he finally looked at him? Was it joy that he saw or something else?

What did she see when Jesus told her to wake up? Did Jarius's daughter recognize Heaven in the eyes of Jesus when she returned to our dusty old world? Did the memory of those eyes remain with her into her old age? Did she tell her grandchildren about them?
When news that his cousin’s head was cut from his body, did the tears run? Did the man of sorrows yell at the world, were his tears added to ours? And when Jesus taught his followers to forgive like him, and walk like him. Did their eyes start to look like his?
Jesus is our pattern for life, his examples are the pattern to follow. As the dominoes of pastoral pretenders fall in our modern world, our call is to redouble our attention to the one who is greater than everyone else. The godless, corporate religious system provides rules of conduct for leaders to follow. But this system is only a band-aid to the soul of man.
What is truly required is a deep transformation within. One that remakes the heart and deepens the soul. This is where your soul begins to grasp the vastness of his heart and is overwhelmed by it.
So here is a question, do you want your soul changed by the world as you live out your life? Or would you rather have your soul changed by the Spirit? What pattern will you follow in this life?
